The Lung of Our Earth - 904 Words
One and a half acres of the rain forest-ââ¬Å"the Lung of the Earthâ⬠, are lost every second. In fact, they now cover only a mere 6% of the earths land surface compared with 14% when humankind first settled. Experts estimate that the last remaining rain forests could be consumed in less than 40 years. Obviously, deforestation has been becoming an alarming phenomenon for the whole world. Writing about this issue, Laura Lopen, John Maier and Dick Thompson express some quite strong opinions. In ââ¬Å"Playing with Fireâ⬠, the authors indicate that the rain forests of the Amazon are being destroyed extremely. Annually, farmers, cattle ranchers, loggers cut down trees for crops, pasturage and production. According to the authors, these actions haveâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦That means they need a large area for agriculture. In reality, half of Brazil is covered by forests. Therefore, agricultural land is deprived from deforestation ways and large-scale burning of forest areas is a typical example. Secondly, the authors believe that consequences of deforestation would not be only an extremely catastrophe for South American but for the entire planet as well. Personally, I have the same opinion about this issue. I think the first affect is on the Amazon rainforest water ecosystem that causes increases in erosion and flooding. In ââ¬Å"Tropical Deforestationâ⬠, Shukla et al (1990) and his team indicate that: ââ¬Å"The land of the Amazon rainforest is naturally nutrient-deficient because most of the nutrients are stored within the aboveground biomass of the vegetation. Tree root systems hold the soil together to slow the rate of flooding and reduce erosion.â⬠Therefore, once the trees are removed, the rainy season can have devastating effects. Additionally, global weather patterns could be affected badly that cause global warming, greenhouse effect and lead to extinction of plant and animal species. Finally, the authors mention to the importance of the Amazon rainforest to human life and the environment. Theme Of Love In Wuthering Heights - 786 Words
Emily Bronteââ¬â¢s Wuthering Heights draws a close line between love and hate as a major theme in the novel. The different sides of love are demonstrated by Bronte through situations that draw upon the nature of being human. The author displays the selfish, destructive and the betrayal side of love between the main character as well as minor characters in the novel and how they are imprisoned by the same recurring cycle. The relationship shared by Heathcliff and Catherine is the most important as it sets the motion of the rest of the novel. Heathcliff and Catherineââ¬â¢s love is a representation of a fantasy connection between two people that exist beyond words and out of reach of the physical world that simply cannot be explained. Heathcliffââ¬â¢s tyrannical traits for his greed and power seeking appetite has reached a point of total insanity that all other characters suffer, as if he wants all to feel the same pain he has experienced. The author presents the betrayal aspect of love when Cathy summits to Heathcliff in result of trying to help and save Linton. The young Cathy is held captive in the first place for her love of Linton which backfires on her since he is simply selfish, weak and lets himself be taken as a pawn to Heathcliffââ¬â¢s ultimate revenge. ââ¬Å"The anguish he had exhibited on the moor subsided as soon as ever he entered Wuthering Heights;Show MoreRelatedTheme Of Love In Wuthering Heights922 Words à |à 4 PagesLove can take many forms. The Enzyme Peroxidase Lab Report - 1548 Words
The Enzyme Peroxidase Case Study Lab Report Autumn Vick I. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this experiment is to learn the effects of a certain enzyme (Peroxidase) concentration, to figure out the temperature and pH effects on Peroxidase activity and the effect of an inhibitor. The procedure includes using pH5, H202, Enzyme Extract, and Guaiacol and calibrating a spectrophotometer to determine the effect of enzyme concentration. As the experiment continues, the same reagents are used with the spectrophotometer to determine the temperature and pH effects on Peroxidase activity. Lastly, to determine the effect of an inhibitor on Peroxidase, an inhibitor is added to the extract. It was found that an increase in enzyme concentration also caused an increase in the reaction rate. The reaction rate of peroxidase increases at 40oC. Peroxidase performed the best under pH5 and declined as it became more basic. The inhibitor (Hydroxy-lamine) caused a decline in the reaction rate. The significance of this experiment is to find the optimal living conditions for Peroxida se. This enzyme is vital because it gets rid of hydrogen peroxide, which is toxic to living environments. II. He had traveled to Italy and watched with interest as city dwellers would stop to begin the day at a coffee bar. Using the same type of model, Schultz purchased and opened his first location as Il Giornale. The company evolved into Starbucks, where multitudes of consumers began purchasing designer coffees, such as espresso, cappuccino, and coffee mocha. Store interiors encourage lounging and relaxing with a newspaper, magazine, laptop, or friends. Each cafe featured enticements such as jazz music in the background, additional merchandise to examine, and comfortable seating. (Reilly, Minnick, Baack, 2011). Until the 2008 recession, Starbucks had continued to grow. Some of the units in larger cities experimented with selling additional products, including lunch service. Then a quickly collapsing economy, possibly coupled with other problems, including over expansion, sent the corporation on a downhill slide. Founder Howard Schultz worried that the addition of so many locations had watered down the Starbucks experience. Reilly, Minnick, Baack, 2011).. Starbucks should be using is departmentalization by geographic region. Starbucks locations are all over the United States. According to our text, ââ¬Å"Geographical departmentalization makes it possible to tailor managerial efforts that address territorial differences. â⬠(Reilly, M. , Minnick, C. , Baack, D. , 2011). Departmentalization can be defined as an effective organi zational tool in that it involves dividing people up into different departments or divisions in which collections of tasks are placed together, such as accounting, marketing, and production. Going through Starbucks case study, the best suited departmentalization for Starbucks would be by Geographic Region. Starbucks has its financial affairs, legal affairs separated from stores. It has also added talent management, human resources and training and development as part of being specialized departments. This structure works, because it is separated from day to day business and does not interfere with store operations. This will help in the different locations to adapt the menu to accommodate. For example the Starbucks in Florida may sale more ice coffees than in Washington State where it is not as hot. When the increase of competition began the decline of sales for Starbucks, the leadership shouldnââ¬â¢t try to centralize power. With the leadership being centralized the organization may start making bad decisions because it only allows for two or three leaders to be overwhelmed and start making wrong decisions, where as if they were to have more ideas from their employees they may be able to come up with a structure that can help them through the decline of sales The configuration that best fits Starbucks would have to be the divisional organization. This is because Starbucks has different products and many business units all around the world. According to an article, Mintzbergââ¬â¢s Organizational Configurations, ââ¬Å"The benefit of the divisional organization is that it allows the line managers to maintain more control and accountability. â⬠(Mindtools, 2012). In conclusion, Starbucks organizations have been a great place for people to work, customers to hang out at, and overall a great place to have coffee. From what I see, the structure that Starbucks has been using, so far has been doing a good job. According to Howard Schultz, Starbucks chairman, ââ¬Å"Starbucks continues to expand our global Starbucks footprint and accelerate the innovation and momentum in our CPG businessâ⬠(Financial Release, 2011) ? It is to be distinguished from musical form and musical style, although in practice these terms are sometimes used interchangeably. G1.a. Alternative Rock Alternative rock is a genre of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular by the 1990s. G1.b. Classical Music Classical music is art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western music (both liturgical and secular). It encompasses a broad period from roughly the 11th century to the present day. G1.d. Hip hop Hip hop is a broad conglomerate of artistic forms that originated within a marginalized subculture in the South Bronx amongst black and latino youth during the 1970s in New York City. G1.e. Pop Music Pop Music is a genre of popular music which originated in its modern form in the 1950s, deriving from rock and roll. G1.g. Rock Music Musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with bass guitar and drums. Typically, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature utilizing a verse-chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse and common musical characteristics are difficult to define. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis. The dominance of rock by white, male musicians has been seen as one of the key factors shaping the themes explored in rock music. Rock places a higher degree of emphasis on musicianship, live performance, and an ideology of authenticity than pop music. H. Related Studies It is quite easy to see exactly how strong the power of music is and will become in the future. There have been many studies proven this. For example, a study shows that students who studied music in high school made better grades than those who did not. The reasoning for this is that listening to music makes you think more efficiently and improves your memory.
